Functional Medicine Nutritionist AND Doula
Hi, I’m Jenny Stevens, functional medicine nutritionist and doula in Fargo, North Dakota. I educate families on nourishment and natural childbirth, so they can conceive, fuel the growth, and birth their babies in strength, female empowerment and wisdom.
My fascination with nutrition began when I was 8 years old reading the “News of Medicine” section each month in our Reader’s Digest magazine. I loved anything related to nutrition and I became enthralled with recipes and cooking. My mother could always count on me to prepare a meal for our family. Being in the kitchen felt natural.
Leaping forward into my mid-twenties – married and now a mother of two daughters. I had a front row seat of observing how my own perinatal choices effected my children well past their birth date.
I did not have the depth of education and wisdom in my 20’s to realize that what I ate directly impacted my babies as they developed in utero and also provided them with their only source of essential nutrients when I was breastfeeding…if I did not eat the essential fatty acids, minerals and vitamins myself, then my little ones did not have easy access to these vital nutrients either.
As my children grew, I walked a very interesting path with them as we all worked together to resolve unique health issues, seeking ways to heal from within and continually going after the root of the problems they experienced as children. This journey brought me into contact with medical doctors, allergy specialists, naturopathic doctors, chiropractors, physical therapists, speech therapists, dietitians and functional practitioners. We learned that nutrition, mindfulness, and exercise healed in ways that vibrantly rebuilt their bodies and strengthened them against childhood dis-ease.
Walking my journey of 40+ years in my quest for true healing versus ‘symptom masking’ has opened my eyes to the countless ways we can help or harm our own bodies, the body of the developing fetus, and the vitality of our newly born children. I have a great desire to help women understand the intuitive wisdom of their bodies and the long-reaching effects their personal choices have on their children’s health and well-being. Oftentimes, women feel overwhelmed by the conflicting information from the health care industry, social media, friends and family. Feelings of overwhelm often lead to apathy or anxiety. Ultimately, a loss of empowerment, choice and a woman’s voice are diminished when women feeling out of control of their life…even resulting in trauma and victimization.
Yes, trauma and victimization are staggering results of the slow erosion of inadequate and misunderstood nutrition and all that is possible through natural childbirth. But, when you are depleted of nourishment, then consuming random calories will never replenish your nutrient stores and give the key nutrients to your baby. You cannot give your baby what you do not have yourself.
It takes a special kind of person to ask, “How are you nourishing yourself? What foundation of health are you building your baby upon? How do YOU want to bring your baby into the world?”
I am grateful to help women and couples become nutritionally grounded as they walk the path from conceiving, pregnancy, birth and postpartum recovery. My nutritional background and doula training positions me to come alongside of you and guide you through a marvelous journey of health, strength and empowerment.
Additionally, it’s a joy for me to embrace who I am and practice functional nutrition while nurturing women as a doula.
